The Leather Jacket Must-Have: Elizabeth and James

Elizabeth and James Yoshimoto Jacket

Elizabeth and James Yoshimoto Jacket

If there is one black leather jacket to invest in this spring, this is the one not to be missed. Designed by Elizabeth and James, the Yoshimoto Jacket is 3 pieces in 1! The first is as shown above which is as the leather jacket. It features an outer layer produced out of their signature blazer fabric, an interior drape shawl  layer of leather,  asymmetrical zippers across the front in two rows, as well as reinforced sculpted shoulder detail. It looks so chic open with the leather draping out from around the inside edges or zipped up with the leather draped up as a shawl neck detail.  For a warmer day, unzip one layer of zippers and the leather detaches from the jacket to become a drape leather vest!!! So chic and cool beyond words. The vest features the zipper detail as well. Now once the pieces are separated , the jacket becomes one of Elizabeth and James signature black blazers! With everyone showing leather this year, this is a great piece to get the most for your money in the style, functionality, construction, and of course cool factor of it all.  This piece just arrived in store along with many other Elizabeth and James leather styles which we are currently obsessing over!

why we love: 3.1 phillip lim

3.1 phillip lim camel leather twist knot skirt

3.1 phillip lim camel leather twist knot skirt

It takes a lot to grab our attention away from fashion week and Phillip Lim has succeeded not only last night with his Fall 2010 show in Bryant Park, but also today with the arrival of his spring collection! The leather skirt (above) is so amazing – the combination of the super buttery soft leather in the camel color finished in the twist knot detail up by the hip makes this skirt super flattering and  a must-have staple piece for any woman’s wardrobe. We paired it in this picture with his navy and silver croc patterned cardigan which is also now in store.

Leather is everywhere and has been since fall ‘09 and we will continue to see leather through at least fall of 2010 based on what the runways are showing thus far. This camel leather skirt is a great modern classic staple piece that can be styled as an all year piece – it is a definite must in the leather category this year.

3.1 Phillip Lim Crimson Rain Trench Coat

Just when we all might have been a little fed up with all of this inclement weather we have had to put up with, Lim has saved us from our dismay with this cherry rain trench. Never again will we sigh in fashion frustration when Mother Nature has handed us a rainy or snowy day!  This is the most fantastic rain coat EVER!!!

The fabric is extremely lightweight, making it perfect for spring summer showers yet also 100% do-able with layers underneath for fall and winter. It has saddle leather hardware detail, tonal buttons and the cutest button/flap detail under the collar in the back that is the perfect detail when the collar is popped.  Thank you Phillip for making us smile after all of this snow and ice – this is why we love faithfully adore you!

Fall 2010 Fashion Week Update:

Fall 2010 Runway Preview

Fall 2010 Runway Preview

Okay I know for many of you, the thought of what will be big next fall seems not so important as what is big for this spring. After all fall is another six months away right? Wrong. This is NY Fashion Week: Fall 2010. There are so many exciting shows going on each minute and the great thing about the New York shows is that everything is very translatable. Paris has couture and New York has unmarked attainability and inspired style. It is certainly relevant to keep an eye out for what will be happening for Fall ‘10 because not only does it start to arrive in stores in June as transition, but a lot of what is arriving this spring will transcend the spring season and carry right over into fall. This spring, most of our designers kept their vision for fall in mind so the collections would work together in their customers closets. What I have seen thus far from the runways is very exciting and parallels quite perfectly and dramatically, I might say, with what is arriving in stores now.

Resounding Fall 2010 inspiration: A Vampiric overtone meets Cher Horowitz in a British rock and roll backdrop with an S+M undertone. It is all a bit Twilight, Buffy, and Clueless with velvets, mini skirts paired with knee and thigh highs, capes, oversize knits, plaids, cropped knits, leather, knapsacks (yes they are back!), military green, deep cognacs, rich merlots, plums, greys, and of course black. LOVE IT!  More to come this week – I will be sure to keep you all posted!

Honey Leather: is there anything sweeter?

3.1 Phillip Lim Croc-Embossed Honey Leather Skirt

honeyskirtdetail

Leave it to Phillip Lim to marry his signature leather mini skirt with this refreshing honey color. It is positively scrumptious and I have already daydreamed at least a handful of looks that I can’t wait to style it with.

I know this is quite a teaser photo, but that is the point. This skirt needs to be seen in person. It has diagnol zipper pocket detailing on the side and the leather is embossed to look like a croc print. (see detail shot at right):

Leather isn’t going anywhere, much to the elation of all of us in the fashion industry. This spring, designers continue to play with the evolution and versatility of leather. This honey skirt is one of our favorites leather skirts we have seen EVER!

Iggy Threadgoode: Spring ‘10 Fashion Inspiration

'Fried Green Tomatoes' Iggy Threadgoode

An Overalled Iggy Threadgoode

An Overalled Iggy Threadgoode

The other night as I was channel surfing, I happened upon one of my all time favorite movies, Fried Green Tomatoes. I have not seen this movie in quite some time, well maybe a year or so, but within five minutes of watching it I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Lead character, Iggy Threadgoode, played by Mary Stuart Masterson, looked as if she had been outfitted by Phillip Lim, Rag + Bone, or Helmut Lang! Her chic denim overalls that she wears throughout most of the movie are a bit distressed, asymmetrical, gathered at the waist with a super chic saddle leather pocket belt, a white cotton shirt layered underneath, and of course finished with a black menswear vest. I scoured the internet for the full body pic but no luck. What I wanted to point out is that her overalls are not ankle length but rolled up just below her knee – it couldn’t be any more relevant!! It is almost as if the entire fashion industry gathered together to watch this movie for inspiration last year when designing their Spring ‘10 collections. Of course this season they aren’t called overalls, but jumpsuits, jumpers, and rompers, but nonetheless they are the exact same thing. Take a look below to see our super chic tomboy, Iggy-inspired pieces that are currently  in the store and some that will be coming in later this season.  I would definitely pair each one with a menswear vest, belt, or leather jacket/vest with gladiator sandals (high or low) or moto-boots – (arriving late spring as well!).

glow fav: Vanity Fair’s Annual Hollywood Issue

Vanity Fair's Newest Hollywood Issue
Vanity Fair’s Newest Hollywood Issue

Each year VF releases a cover of the hottest actresses of the year and the cover shot is always very captivating. I love this year’s palette of choice: such an ethereal neutral which pops against the green grass and their glowing skin and hair.  This cover is definitely one of my favorites along with their ‘06 cover that featured a suited Tom Ford with Keira Knightly and Scarlett Johansson in the nude. French Influence: Organza Evening Trench from Ports 1961

Ports 1961 Organza Evening Trench

Ports 1961 Organza Evening Trench

Tres Chic! What else can I say about this AMAZING organza trench from Ports 1961.  It is the perfect statement piece to pair over a dress. This reminds me of the Golden Age of Hollywood where starlets like Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Ava Gardner would always look so perfectly finished to the last detail. The detailing on this is amazing from the organza sash and trench pockets at the breast, to the buttons on the sleeve. It is shown above tied in a bow in the back (the front view is seen above right) and tied in the front as an entry piece. What I love about the sheer genius, literally, of this evening trench is that is sheer organza which means whatever dress is underneath is still visible. It is a statement finishing layer that adds depth to the outfit without masking it as all other evening coats do to a dress. The photos above are shot in black and white as a reflection of just how classic and couture looking this organza trench is: can’t you just picture this look on a Parisian woman walking into the opera house or through the Tuileries Gardens on her way to some fabulous party? The dress that is featured underneath is designed by Ports 1961 as well. It is a stunning mesh stretch lingerie dress with underwire and an exposed bralette back. It features the most delicate dove gray organza straps. I love that the designer chose the contrast of the organza straps. It adds great depth and signature to the dress. It is fitted to show off a woman’s body and the fabric is quite substantial, which means it conceals all those areas that slinky fitted dresses normally highlight.   Together and apart, these two pieces are must-haves for any woman’s collection.
